Taper Notes:
View NotesThe only complete copy of this show is shn ID 17183, the composite assembled by Jack Warner which includes various lineage copies of Ken Lee's and Dave Tamarkin's cassette recordings. (For the record, the Lee recording was most likely made with two mics spread on the balcony ledge into a sony tc-124 cassette deck, and not a sony tc-110 using an internal mic as noted. I say this because a) the recording is very much in stereo, and b) this is what Lee himself said when John Hance was working on his tapes). Most of the material in disc three was upgraded with the addition of shn ID 19922 which is from Marty Weinberg's master audience reel. This source upgrades King Bee through the beginning of The Main Ten and then cuts. The material I've provided in this seed is the rest of what Marty taped that night which I've never seen in circulation before. While it has some glitches, the sound quality is superior to the circulating version. Just listen to Caution on this seed and then check out the version that you presently have in your collection. Before I try to patch this material into the 17183/19922 composite, I would like to hear from other listeners in regards to pitch. To me this new source sounds correct and the Lee recording of the electric portion seems to run fast. I welcome any input in this matter. The raw 24 bit files of this portion are available to any capable soul looking to work on this project. Without a sound board in the vault, every byte counts! View Notes-- Acoustic set through 1:50 of El Paso, entire electric set is MAC>C>D>CD>EAC>SHN, from Ken Leigh's master, recorded from the center loge with a Sony TC-110 cassette deck with built-in microphone -- Uncle John's Band and NRPS set is MAC>C>R>D>CD>EAC>SHN, from Ken Leigh's master -- From 1:50 of El Paso through 0:03 of Uncle John's Band is MAC>R>D>CD>EAC>SHN, from Dave Tamarkin's master, recorded from the floor with a Sony Dictaphone -- There are some small master glitches ~1:30 of Black Peter. -- The Tamarkin master is fairly brutal, but it's the only tape which supplies the end of El Paso and Brokedown Palace. There is some serious tape warble on these tunes, and there is some very bad tape crackle between songs, which I have removed where possible without touching the music. Listener beware! For completists only. -- There is a master tape flip at 6:14 of All I Ever Wanted. Very little music seems to be missing. I have smoothed the cut. -- There is a master glitch at 2:37 of Candyman. -- There are a few level fluctuations in Candyman. -- There is a master tape flip after Candyman. No music is missing. -- The Easy Wind which has circulated with this date has been determined to be from July 10, 1970, and, as such, has not been included here. Based on the tapes, it does not seem that Easy Wind was played this evening. -- There is a small master glitch at 4:03 of Drums following Good Lovin'. -- From Dave Tamarkin's recollection, there is a broken string which accounts for the break after Good Lovin'. The electric set was one long set, not two sets as it has sometimes circulated in the past. -- There is a master tape flip at 7:30 of Lovelight. Very little music seems to be missing. I have smoothed the cut.

SET 2 is the opening acoustic Dead set. The end of El Paso, Brokedown Palace tuning, Brokedown Palace, Uncle John's Band & the NRPS set that followed (aka - SET 3), did not circulate as of (2/98)**. SET 4 is a electric Dead set. Eyewitness & AUD recorder David Tamarkin says this set definetly ends with Good Lovin'. ***Does not include Easy Wind, which is not on Teddy GoodBear's copies. SET 5 is another electric Dead set. The first 3:10 of the jam after Alligator is just Jerry & the drummers; this jam involves allusions to Not Fade Away, Goin Down The Road, The Other One and Caution, but never settles into any steady riff despite the drummers energetic efforts to herd it into Not Fade from 7:30 on -- when they finally do slip into it by the back door at 10:39 the effect is explosive. The dovetail into Goin Down The Road 3 minutes later is as deft; this song features the additional verse "Mama told me son don't go down there." There are Caution hints in the transition from Mountain jam back to Not Fade. Pigpen's harmonica is prominent early in Caution -- the jamming here is over the top, more than a match for any show ever -- the segue into Lovelight takes it from a roar to a whisper to a roar in 3 seconds. It's hard to believe they didn't play an encore, or two. There is no SBD master of this show in the vault. ======================================================================== From: Teddy GoodBear To: Dave Tamarkin Subject: Re: 11/6/70 & 8/17/70? Date: Tuesday, February 15, 2000 7:07 PM I don't know the name of the guy who taped the bulk of that show, but he was the infamous usher who's been mentioned for years. He did almost everyone who played there but after a falling out with my friend, his brother in law, we never got to dub most of his stash. What was gotten includes several dead, nrps, janis, tuna, tull, allmans, delaney & bonnie, traffic & j.a. shows. He would set up off the balcony with a mike spread. I have no idea what he used. that small acoustic portion was mine on a panasonic portable, if memory serves. What you have as 8/17/70 is the same as what i have. As i mentioned, it was on one his tapes with no info. He didn't trade so we don't know where else it could have been from. hope this all helps. Dave ======================================================================== ----- Original Message ----- From: From: Dave Tamarkin Date: Wed, 3 Nov 1999 20:17:11 EST Subject: 11/6/70 Hi folks, my name is Dave Tamarkin. For many years now I've been trying to correct the base on the subject of 11/6/70 capitol, port chester. This was my 1st show. I was already quite familiar with existing released lp's of the dead. Anyway, I brought a recorder with me not knowing about things like fresh batteries and how long these guys really play, I only managed to get a small part of the show. Many years later, I found out that my friend's brother in law was the often mentioned mystery usher who may have recorded some shows. He had a deal with the promoter to tape off the balcony while tending to his job. His was the source for many good tapes from there, including jethro tull, hot tuna, janis joplin, traffic and more. My copy of this show has the acoustic brokedown palace, followed by ujb to close the set. Also, if you listen closely, after good lovin, you hear a mention of a break to change a string, if memory serves. After the break, alligator follows. One show that night! i walked in about 8:15 and left about 2. And yes, the nrps set does exist on tape, at least from that night. keep up the good work, DT RECORDING 18 AF 80 A? & 90 AF. **NRPS set & missing acoustic dead songs surfaced 2/00, originating from David Tamarkin to Teddy GoodBear. The found "missing" acoustic dead songs are in somewhat degraded sound quality.
