Wow, this recording has been a long time coming.

For the 223rd entry in my archival series I am finally getting around to putting out this incredibly historic night that has been sitting, gathering dust in my collection for 20+ years now.  The emotional weight of the combination of the shock of this being the (unintentional) closing night from my favorite music venue of all time and the events that transpired downtown in NYC just a few hours after this marathon of a show wrapped up caused me to take these tapes and file them away in my collection.  I never pulled them out to listen to again until I started transferring batches of tapes once the COVID pandemic lockdown started in mid 2020.

This night is historic in many ways - obviously the end of an era in NYC music history, an incredible performance from a musician (DJ Logic) who I’d seen dozens of times at this (and other) venues around town, the guests, oh the guests - Warren Haynes (of Govt Mule and the Allman Brothers Band) + Stanley Jordan (jazz great) on guitar [and one could not ask for 2 more guitarists with different styles to be sharing a stage at the same time] and Mike Gordon (of Phish) on bass.

Guests or no guests, this band threw down the performance of a lifetime at this venue. 3 and 3/4 hours of funk, jazz, deep grooves, tight songs and improvisation all rolled up into one.

Despite having a few more shows (including 2 nights with Bob Weir) on the calendar, this wound up being the final show at Wetlands after EVERYTHING was cancelled following 9/11/01 [to be exact, there was one additional "unofficial" show thrown together at some point after 9/11; but this was the final "official" show] .  Lots of people have requested this show from me over the years, among them friends who say that the only reason they are still alive today is that they were out incredibly late at this show and ran late for work.  There have been a couple of other recordings posted over the years (Scott Brown posted Curtis Claymont’s version back in 2003 but the comments on archive.org indicate that there are cuts, stutters, etc. and there was no attempt at proper tracking nor assigning song titles to any of the tracks; Ropeadope Records released a recording from the soundboard in 2015, but again, the tracking is not correct and there is no attempt at identifying the songs).

While the recording itself was absolutely beautiful (Bill and I went all out for such a special night — with Bill mixing the onstage Scheops he’d set up with my Neumanns split on 2 stands near the PA speakers, and Bill’s live mix really shines!) and took almost no effort to master, it took me a few weeks to work out the tracking and identify (most of) the songs.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this very impactful performance as much as I did listening to it 20+ years after the fact.
