Note that I scrubbed hundreds and hundreds of nearby loud claps/whistles/yells from this recording to make it as close to perfect as possible.  Also note that there is a rather quick fade after the Breakfast at Volo's (from set 2, not the Soundcheck version) as I chose that moment to swap in a new blank DAT tape as I was afraid the show was going to run long and potentially get cut otherwise (and it DID run long -- OVER 4 HOURS)!

To recap of what I wrote in my previous BARN entry (#172 -- the first week of this 3 week Deep Banana Blackout "Boot Camp" run at Wetlands in April 1999):
Getting back to my old favorite venue, The Wetlands (which was, for a while, my second home...), I begin a series of releases to fill in the historical blanks of the band Deep Banana Blackout. I saw this band, if my records are correct, 27 times between 1997 and 2000, and so far I have only posted a couple of recordings I made of them. At most (if not all) of these shows I was the only taper -- so checking the historical record on archive.org, there are huge holes which are concerts that only I recorded.

For a few years running, this band was the best thing out there in terms of a reliable funk show -- so danceable, so much fun mixing solid originals with funk covers covering all the bases - James Brown, The Meters, P-Funk, Janis Jopin, etc. -- with Jen Durkin as a super spunky high energy lead singer. ALWAYS a good time!!!

Fast forward to a February 18, 2017 when word gets out that classic James Brown drummer Clyde Stubblefield had died. On Facebook, I see photos that the band Deep Banana Blackout has posted -- in one of them, their drummer Eric Kalb is standing backstage at Wetlands, arm-in-arm with two incredible (and now, sad to say, dead) drummers -- Butch Trucks of the Allman Brothers, and Clyde Stubblefield; and another photo featuring those same guys plus Michael Ray (sometime trumpet player for Sun Ra Arkestra AND Kool And The Gang, leader of his own band The Kosmic Krewe, and occasional horn player with Phish and Trey Anastasio). I asked to be reminded whether this was part of a New Years run from Wetlands, but the band's former manager Bob Kennedy reminded me that the photos were taken during one night of a 3 week Wetlands run (once a week on Thursdays) from April of 1999 which the band had dubbed "Boot Camp" and would feature a variety of big name special guests -- in addition to Butch, Clyde, and Michael, other guests from this run included Marshall Allen, Fred Wesley, DJ Logic, Eric Krasno and Neal Evans of the (then) newly formed Soulive, Dr. Didg (also now sadly passed on), Dean Bowman of Screaming Headless Torsos, and lots of other friends of the DBB.

Notes about this particular show:
This performance was from the third week of the run -- and while in my opinion the 2nd week was the best, this one is surely no slouch!  Following up on the incredible energy from the week before, we are taken to new heights by the legendary Fred Wesley, trombone player from James Brown's classic years, and clearly having a great time himself.  Adding to the mix is the innovative DJ Logic who adds his signature funky grooves on every track he is featured on (in fact, his DBB collaboration would go so well that he would eventually collaborate with "Fuzz" (DBB's guitarist) for a side project/album of their own.  Also featured in this show were members of the band Fro, members of the (then) brand new band Soulive, friends from the band Electric Hill, Native, Pauley Ethnic, and a spoken word performance from noted "official" Mets' poet, Frank Messina. Also featured are several Wetlands employees.  While the strongest moments from this show absolutely hold their own against the best moments of the previous week's show, my only criticism of this show comes from the fact that there were SO MANY guests coming on and off the stage, the energy sometimes flags a bit as guests are shuffled on and off the stage. 

Once again, this show runs just about 4 hours and was a marathon in and of itself to be at, and to listen to today.  Also, I spent 3 months scrubbing COUNTLESS amounts of someone right near where I was set up yelling "woo woo" into the right microphone, loud nearby claps, whistles, etc.  This one took the most effort by far of this run.  There were also a couple of minor glitches that appeared during my DAT transfer which I have also attempted to mask as much as possible.  I hope that you enjoy and appreciate the amount of work that went into making this as close to perfect as possible!!!
