For BARN114, I present to you the 2nd of 3 Conehead Buddha shows that I saw/recorded.  This one is interesting because it is a short, tight set which was the "HORDE Band To Band Combat" where 5 bands which were all competing for a slot on the HORDE tour the following summer.  As far as I can tell, this is probably the first time I ever saw (or even heard) the band, just went to the (FREE!) show at the urging of Peter Costello, who was a big proponent of these guys.  For anyone who didn't check out my other CHB posting, the best way to describe them mostly a horn-based ska band, with a lot of Talking Heads influence.

Because it was sort of a showcase, each band played under an hour, and consequently the band tried to pick some of their more easily digestable songs, and didn't stretch them out too long....so this is a good introduction to them.  Apparently a lot of their fans came out, as you can hear the huge crowd swells after each song, and the super enthusiastic cheers for them at the end.  It does appear that they won and did get to do some shows on the HORDE tour, but I can't find any documentation of specific shows they did on the tour.

Anyway, I do remember this night being strange because it was sponsored by Kool cigarettes and they were giving away free packs to anyone in the room....and it was very smokey in the venue.  This is consequently a little strange since smoking has been outlawed in NYC bars, as (I think) is this sort of cigarette promotional tie-in.  I stuck around and recorded one band after Conehead played -- I think it was Sole Pocket, though it may have been Soulstice?
